In another fine Scottish Junior Cup tie Bonnyrigg duly progressd to the third round of the national tournament with a hard-earned victory over the Fife cracks.
However, it was not until the last quarter of an hour that the Rose scored the goals th
at took them through.
Manager Alan Miller decided to move Andy Campbell to right back, bringing in Ally Reid at centre back and moving James Morrice forward in place of the unlucky Charlie Brigain.
St Andrews pressed from the start and back in favour Craig Coyle had to look lively in the early seconds to grab the ball from the feet of the onrushing Dave Evans.
It was the visitors who took the lead in six minutes when a left wing cross from Paul Farquharson found the head of unmarked Gary Sutherland and he looped a header over the exposed Craig Coyle.
The Rose were stung by this setback and Sean Paliczka forced keeper Paul Davidson to head a through ball clear from just outside his area.
The equaliser did come, however, in 15 minutes when Morrice and Paliczka combined and Graeme McCaul was on hand to rifle home a fine equaliser.
Paddy Flannery was leading the line well and looked in the mood. He had a good shot deflected for a corner as Bonnyrigg went for another goal. St Andrews were fighting hard and the game flowed from end to end.
Big defender Scott McInroy should have finished better when he headed over from only a few yards out with the home defence posted missing. Paliczka then had an effort brilliantly blocked by Steve Fraser as both sides went for the goal to take them into the lead.
Fortunately for Bonnyrigg they scored it. Morrice finished brilliantly after Paliczka and David Burrell had kept the ball in play after a clearance from James Suttie.
Darran Thomson had a great chance to add to the lead next minute but he fired over from another teasing cross from Paliczka. It was half time and the Rose were just ahead.
However, St Andrews levelled immediately after the break when danger man Farquharson stung the large home crowd by firing home a left foot shot.
Paliczka almost gave the Rose the lead again but his lob was headed clear by Graeme Makein.
It was another cracking match and both teams sensed that the third goal could prove decisive. Again, it was the home side who got it. After Burrell had just missed a cross shot from Flannery the same two combined for the third.
Flannery flicked the ball behind McInroy and Burrell pounced and expertly finished from 15 yards. Paliczka forced another good save from Davidson before the Rose scored the clincher.
Ross Hamilton had the last laugh after his unfortunate own goal at the Recreation Park when he coolly sent home a spot kick awarded after a trip on Paliczka by Scott McInroy.
A fine cup tie and a very good result for Bonnyrigg, who have been drawn away to BallingrayRovers in the third round, which will be played on November 29.
Both sides did not have a failure with everyone giving their all, but Ally Reid and Scott Ritchie were rocks at the centre of the home defence while Paliczka never gave the Fifers a moment's peace with his all-action play and he formed a fine partnership with the experienced Flannery.
Burrell had another fine game in midfield, ably assisted by Morrice, Thomson and McCaul.
It's back to Super League action next week when Camelon Juniors visit New Dundas Park (kick off 2pm).
